We work with G-9 thermoset plastic laminates. G-9 is a type of compound glass melamine material, consisting of woven glass fabric and melamine resin. It is notably heat-resistant, flame-resistant, arc and alkali-resistant. Read on below to learn more about our glass melamine materials and how they can benefit your project.

What is G-9?

G-9 is one of the most commonly used glass melamine laminate materials used in plastic injection and molding applications. Its arc and flame resistance offer tremendous dexterity and strength, no matter how high the humidity, moisture level, or temperature.

Because of these features, G-9 is one of the top materials for machine use. It does not lose dimensional stability, and its numerous properties ensure flawless execution no matter the application intensity.

Notable G-9 properties include:

Tensile Strength — 70,000 psi
Comprehensive Strength — 39,000 psi
Flexural Strength - LW - A 0.125” — 55,000 psi
Specific Gravity — 1.85
Bond Strength — 1,900 psi
Shear Strength — 18,000 psi
Hardness - Mohs Scale — 115
Flammability Rating — 94V-0
Izod Impact Strength at 49°C - LW — 12.50
Water Absorption (24 hours) — 0.60
Thermal Expansion Coefficient in Degrees Celsius (x10^-5) — 1.50
Maximum Operating Temperature — 284° Fahrenheit

What forms of G-9 are available?

G-9 glass melamine materials come in various shapes and sizes based on your needs and project requirements, including:

• Sheets
• Tubes
• Rods

All G-9 rods, tubes, and sheets are available in various dimensions, lengths, diameters and thicknesses.

What is G-9 used for?

Like G-5 glass melamine laminates, G-9 is used in numerous applications due to its high mechanical strength and electrical insulation. It’s predominantly used in manufacturing motor wedges, circuit breaker components, terminal boards, switch mounds and switchboard panels, arc barriers, and much more.

Should I use G-9 or G-5?

G-5 and G-9 are both glass melamines. While both offer moisture resistance and high textile strength, G-5 is older and doesn’t have as strong properties as G-9. Additionally, G-9 can withstand outdoor elements and wet conditions. For these reasons, G-9 has widely replaced G-5 as the desired glass melamine material in manufacturing. You can further use G-9 in place of G-5.
