Fire-retardant FR-5 glass epoxy is perfect for dimensional stability and mechanical strength. It resists high temperatures and prevents flames or fires from spreading. Similar to G-11 glass epoxy, it also provides amazing electrical insulation.
FR-5 can be used for applications requiring G-11, but not inversely. G-11 may not be applicable for FR-5 requirements.
What is FR-5?
Like other glass epoxy materials, FR-5 contains a mix of glass-fiber and epoxy resin. In the same family as other FR materials, FR-5 offers thermal properties resisting high temperatures, flames, and fires. Additionally, it offers high tensile strength, low moisture absorption, and high impact strength.
FR-5’s material properties include:
Specific Gravity — 1.82
Tensile Strength — 63,000 pounds per square inch (psi)
Flexural Strength - LW - A 0.125” — 75,000 psi
Shear Strength — 22,000 psi
Bond Strength — 2,200 psi
Hardness - Mohs Scale — 112
Flammability Rating — 94HB
Izod Impact Strength at 49°C - LW — 12.00
Water Absorption (24 hours) — 0.20
Thermal Expansion Coefficient in Degrees Celsius (x10^-5) — 1.10
Maximum Operating Temperature — 356° Fahrenheit
What forms of FR-5 are available?
FR-5 composite materials are manufactured in various shapes and sizes, such as:
• Sheets
• Tubes
• Rods
All forms can be used in projects requiring various dimensions, lengths, diameters and thicknesses. If you have specific project requirements, don’t be afraid to get in touch for a consultation. Our experts will coordinate with you on the best shape and size specifications for your project.
