Torlon

Torlon plastic is a polyamide-imide (PAI) and a non-crystalline thermoplastic made from trimellitic anhydride and aromatic diamines. It is the highest-performing thermoplastic that is still melt processable, which makes it the go-to polymer for many different applications. 

The benefits of TORLON are seemingly never-ending  For example, it has more strength at extreme temperatures (500°F) than other engineered plastics do at room temperatures.  It is a popular polymer among the aerospace industry due to its flame-retardant abilities, extreme durability and corrison-resistance.

Also, Torlon is generally unaffected by chemicals like aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons.  In fact, even acids cannot damage Torlon at moderate temperatures.  Torlon's strengths extend beyond its durability and versatility.  This thermoplastic is also extremely lightweight.  It is  half the weight of aluminum, which allows for a lighter product, which can actually increase mechanical efficiency. Moreover, Torlon can also be injection molded, compression molded and machined.  It is also quieter than metal, which is just one of the reasons why it makes a great option for metal replacement.

 

Torlon 4203 (electrical grade) is a great material to use for electrical connectors and insulators. Torlon 4301 (bearing grade) is often used for non-lubricated bearings, bearing cages and reciprocating compressor parts. Finally, Torlon 5530 (glass-reinforced grade) is suitable for rotors, insulators, impellers and bum-in sockets.
